This is a report on Chinese to English translation practice. The source texts are two engineering academic papers Influence of water-rich tunnel by shield tunneling on existing bridge pile foundation in layered soils and Influence of foundation pit excavation on adjacent metro tunnel using seepage stress coupling, with approximately 11000 words, which cover shield tunneling and influence of foundation pit excavation on subway tunnel. The translation of these two papers not only shows the rich research achievements of School of Civil Engineering of our university, but also enables foreign experts and scholars to know more about domestic technical development, builds a bridge of communication between domestic and foreign scholars, and promotes the development and prosperity of the project. Therefore,it is of great practical and theoretical significance to study the translation practice of such texts and explore the translation rules and methods. The two papers belong to informative text. From the view of content,it is informative, logic, objective with many professional terms. The target language readers are foreign experts and scholars. Therefore, the translation must be simple and clear, accurately convey the information of the source texts, and try to overcome the language and expression differences between Chinese and English,so as to achieve the purpose of academic communication.Guided by the functional equivalence theory proposed by Eugene Nida, this practice focuses on the translation methods of engineering academic papers from lexical, syntactic and textual level,so as to improve the fluency and readability of the translation. The report shows that:at the lexical level, equivalence can be achieved by conversion of part of speech, omission of category words and consistency of technical expression and term translation.Syntactic equivalence can be achieved by supplement and conversion of voice for non-subject sentences and integration of running sentences. From the perspective of text, there is a lot of implicit logic in engineering academic papers.Textual equivalence is mainly achieved by amplification of logical connectives and omission of redundancies. In addition, there are differences between Chinese and English academic papers in format of references and figures,so attention should be paid to the translation and conversion of the format to meet the requirements of the target journal.
