Among the four great Ci poets of the Qing Dynasty,Zheng Wenzhuo in the late Qing was an all-rounder in the true sense of the word as he commanded an extensive knowledge of epigraphy, calligraphy, painting, seal carving, medicine, music, and connoisseurship, etc.besides his accomplishments on poetry. The history of literature and art in the late Qing underwent dramatic changes and showed extremely distinctive characteristics of the times. In light of this, only by comprehensively understanding Zheng Wenzhuo’s expertise in a variety of areas and his multiple artistic identities, and by analyzing and examining his personality, his theory, and his art from the perspective of literary history, can we gain an in-depth understanding of both his poems and poetics. The first chapter mainly discusses the literary background and origin of Zheng Wenzhuo’s time,as well as Zheng Wenzhuo’s multiple literary identities and his academic origins under this background. In contrast to the Ming Dynasty, the academic style of the Qing Dynasty is empty, advocating empirical evidence, taking the retro as the banner, and the wind of touchstone research is blazing. The literati in the late Qing Dynasty also sought the ideal artistic realm of "poetry, calligraphy, painting and printing".Through tracing the background and origin of Zheng Wenzhuo’s academic cultivation,it is helpful to explore and understand Zheng Wenzhuo’s unique aesthetic taste of jinshi. The second chapter focuses on the influence of Zheng Wenzhuo’s diverse artistic identity on his creation. The classification of Zheng Wenzhuo’s "jinshi Ci" and "painting Ci"is helpful to better grasp Zheng Wenzhuo’s achievements in creation. The analysis and conclusion of the construction of Ci poetry under the complex artistic identity is helpful to restore the process of Zheng Wenzhuo’s ci poetry and better understand his ci poetry and ci science. The third chapter discusses the influence of Zheng Wenzhuo’s complex literary and artistic identity on his ci studies from the perspectives of aesthetics, practice view and Ci history view.Zheng Wenzhuo has multiple literary and artistic identities, but also has a consistent aesthetic interest, which is shown in his ci studies. The rest of the thesis discusses the separation of ci concepts among Zheng Wenzhuo,Wang,Zhu and Kuang, trying to find out the uniqueness of Zheng Wenzhuo and the relationship between Zheng and the other three.Due to Zheng Wenzhuo’s influence on the science of jinshi,he integrated the aesthetic thoughts with the essence of jinshi into the criticism of Ci poetry, which is an innovative way of thinking about art.Such a way of thinking not only exists in the intersection of the science of jinshi and Ci poetry, but also exists in many artistic fields such as the science of jinshi and calligraphy and painting.Through the discussion on the relationship between Zheng Wenzhuo’s activities on jinshi and ci studies,it has important enlightenment significance to reveal the literary ecology of ci students in recent years.
