The original text of this translation practice report is excerpted from the second chapter Endless Ways of Seeing of the book An Immense World: How Animal Senses Reveal the Hidden Realms Around Us.The text mainly introduces diverse visual ways of animals and complicated evolutionary processes of them, aiming at enhancing people’s awareness of understanding animals’ visual world. As the popular science text,it elaborates objective facts with vivid language, performing both informative and operative functions. Thus due to its features, the theory of translation shifts is adopted in the report. To translate complicated structures such as non-finite verbs and subordinate clauses, appropriate translation methods are applied in the translation, such as class shifts and structure shifts. At the same time, the analysis of context is also conducted in order to realize coherence of the translation. At last, the translation of similes and metaphors used in the text is analyzed, focusing on the shifts of images. From the perspectives of vocabulary, complex sentences and figurative images, this report conducts a number of case analyses, demonstrates the practical application of translation shifts theory and explores the appropriate translation methods for popular science texts. In the last chapter, translation experience gets summarized with the purpose of providing reference for future translation activities of similar texts.
