| Lin Shu’s translations were a huge phenomenon,popular and read by countless people d uring the late Qing and early Republican period,a period of transition in modern history.In h is twenty years as a translator,he translated nearly two hundred novels,and these achieveme nts laid the foundation for Lin Shu’s reputation as a leading translator in the history of literar y translation,and his translated novels became known as ’Lin’s novels’.Lin’s translated novel s were praised by various literary figures in the late Qing Dynasty and early Republican peri od,but as the historical trend progressed,they were both praised and criticised,especially du ring the May Fourth period when they were strongly refuted and Lin Shu himself was questi oned by various parties and even criticised as a representative of the conservative school.Th e contradictory status of Lin Shu and his translated novels in the world of literary translation has led writers and readers to inquire into the reasons for this great contradiction.The aim of this paper is to place Lin’s translated novels in a specific historical context,and through the c ontrast between the original text and the translated text,to sort out the rise and fall of Lin’s tr anslated novels,their artistic characteristics,and their status and influence in the modern tran sition period,in an attempt to provide a new perspective for Lin Shu’s research and a new wa y of interpreting the historical reality of the late Qing and early Republican period in its entir ety.The first chapter focuses on the development of translated fiction in the late Qing and e arly Republican periods.It begins with an overview of the emergence of translated fiction in the late Qing and early Ming dynasties,which is extremely important for the subsequent deta iled discussion of the development and influence of Lin-translated fiction.The second is to s ort out the translation style of modern translated novels,where the strategy of mixing "transl ation" and "composition" as a "re-creation" of literary translation influenced the production o f translation style,which is also manifested in Lin’s translated novels.This is also evident in Lin’s translation of the novel.This is also evident in Lin’s translation of his novels.Again,th rough an analysis of the manifestation and causes of Chinese literary modernity in modern lit erary translations,we seek evidence of new changes in the genre and consciousness of mode rn translated novels.The second chapter focuses on the stylistic features of Lin’s novels in translation.It look s at three aspects of Lin’s novels:the choice of subject matter,the new changes in language a nd the transformation of the narrative mode of his works.The themes provide a glimpse of th e translation style of the time,while the innovations in language and narrative mode provide a glimpse of how the literary world of the time was grounded in tradition and embraced the n ew in the face of the impact of Western culture.The third chapter explores how the conflict between Chinese and Western cultures was creat ed and dissolved in Lin Shu’s translation activities in the late Qing and early Ming dynasties.Lin Shu used the translation technique of ’assimilation’ and ’dissimilation’,creatively applied the ’novelistic writing style’,and integrated the artistic style of Western novels in his creative activities.Chapter Four revolves around the influence of Lin’s translated novels in literary history.As a pioneer,Lin Shu’s role in the ideological conception of the translated novel,his influen ce on the comparative development of Chinese and Western literature,and even on the devel opment of the modern novel world as a whole,was far-reaching.He opened the way for selfconsciousness in literary translation during the modern transition,and made an indelible cont ribution to the modern transformation of Chinese literature. |
