Since the new century, with China’s increasing international status, the world’s attention to China has also been increasing.Foreign countries want to gain an understanding of China from various aspects such as political situation, economic phenomena, history and culture, human geography, social life, and national image, and China will no longer be closed and negligible. As one of the mainstream Western media,BBC has always had a high level of attention to China, shooting and producing a large number of documentaries on Chinese themes, which has sparked heated discussions among audiences around the world. However, documentaries produced in China have had a poor response worldwide and have rarely received recognition from foreign audiences.Understanding China in the eyes of the"others" is beneficial for us to better construct and spread the image of China.Among them, humans are the protagonists of modernity and the most profound experienced. The key to documenting and reproducing China lies in documenting and reproducing the people. Therefore, this paper takes the Chinese documentaries produced and broadcasted by BBC since the new century as the research object, and uses theoretical methods such as frame three-level analysis,Visual semiotics, the theory of others, and narratology to deeply study the image of Chinese people in BBC documentaries. The specific content is as follows:The first part conducts text analysis on the selected documentary works, categorizing the types of national images based on factors such as age, occupation, gender, and region, and categorizing them into trendy individuals and rural poor people in economic development, teachers and teenagers in Chinese education, and women from social and family perspectives. From the presentation results,it can be concluded that the image of Chinese citizens in BBC documentaries is mixed and mixed. The second part explores the ways and means of presenting the image of Chinese people in BBC documentaries.Using the theories of film and television aesthetics,Visual semiotics and narratology, starting from the audio-visual language, narrative mode, theme connotation and ideology of documentaries,it analyzes the methods of presenting characters in sample documentaries, and summarizes the general rules of presenting the image of Chinese people in BBC documentaries by documentary means. The third part delves into the reasons why BBC documentaries present the image of Chinese citizens in such a way, which are influenced by various factors such as the historical background, national interests, and cultural context. The main reason is the change in awareness of Sino British diplomatic relations, the expression and reflection of Western cultural mentality, and a certain degree of reflection on the reality of Chinese society. The fourth part takes care of oneself with others, reflecting on the problems of domestic and foreign film and television institutions in presenting the image of the Chinese people, such as being biased, subjective interference, and lack of communication.Based on this, relevant measures are proposed for self constructing the national image, striving to achieve three-dimensional dissemination of a good national image through multimedia and multiple channels.
