With the development of courses on interpreting ethics established in more and more institutions in China, the related topics have gradually become an indispensable part of interpreting teaching. However,as the design and evaluation of the teaching of interpreting ethics is still in its infancy, they need to be scientifically and systematically constructed and optimized. In this respect, this study aims to investigate the effectiveness of the teaching methods applied in the course entitled"Professional Ethics in Interpreting".The research looks into students’ motivation, participation, and level of recognition of the course content.Through the research, this study is expected to provide constructive suggestions to improve the effectiveness of teaching from the perspective of course design,to analyze the possibility of elevating student awareness in ethical issues and hence advance their professional qualifications, and to summarize the values and shortcomings of teaching based on the feedback from students who took the course. In addition, since the study involves different groups of students, the research hopes as well to compare the feedback from undergraduate students and graduate students, the status of learning in terms of knowledge taught in the class and the evolution of ethical awareness among class attendees,in an effort to explore the best practices of teaching interpreting ethics for different groups of students. The subjects of this study are undergraduate and graduate students in Beijing Foreign Studies University. The research methods include questionnaire survey and semi-structured interview. The research specifically focused on three questions:(1)How does the course distinguish the designs of teaching in accordance with students of different backgrounds?(2)According to the feedback from students, how well has the teaching objectives of this course been accomplished?(3)From the student point of view, how should the course design be optimized? This thesis comes to three conclusions:(1)In accordance with students of different backgrounds, the course should distinguish the designs of teaching in three dimensions, namely, difficulty, form and requirements;(2)The fundamental teaching objectives of this course have been properly met, with minor losses due to objective causes;(3)Based on the actual situation of the course and students’ feedback, the course should be optimized from three aspects,i.e.,diversifying the assessment methods, increasing classroom feedback and structuring a session of knowledge go-through.The learner-centered study of the effect and improvement of course design enriches the application of mixed method to the field of interpreter training, supplements the domestic research on the teaching of professional Professional Ethics in Interpreting, and provides advice for the improving the course based on students’ impression and feedback. Moreover,on the basis of previous research, the comparison between different student backgrounds is added to broaden the applicable groups of the course and provide plans for adapting the course to different groups of students.
