Herbert Marcuse, one of the main generals of the Frankfurt School, combined Marx’s theory of human emancipation with Freudian psychoanalysis and proposed the theory of “Eros Liberation”,trying to dissolve the alienation of human beings in modern civilization through the release of individual eros. This thesis intends to return to the scene of Marcuse’s theory of “Eros Liberation” from a reductionist perspective, and explore the idea of its integration and development of Marxism,in order to provide some inspiration for the development path of contemporary Marxist aesthetic thought in China on the basis of the outline of Marcuse’s aesthetic thought of “Eros Liberation”.This thesis is divided into five parts, including the introduction. The introduction mainly elaborates the reasons and significance of the topic, the current situation and trends of research, and the research methods and innovations of the dissertation. The first chapter examines the context in which the theory of erotic emancipation was born. The theory of “Eros Liberation” is a theoretical product for the historical era.The situation of the old and new regime in Germany led Marcuse to the path of Marxism;the repressive state of human beings in the technical totalitarian rule led Marcuse to explore the path of human liberation;Heidegger’s existentialism,Marxist thought and Freud’s psychoanalysis provided Marcuse with theoretical resources. The second chapter mainly dismantles the aesthetic thought construction of “Eros liberation” from three aspects: the humanistic reading of Marx, the communication and combination of Freudian doctrine and Marx’s thought, and the reconstruction of nonrepressed civilization, and sorts out the aesthetic transport thoughts of erotic liberation theory.Marcuse argues that eros is both the foundation of the new society and the essence of the human being, and that the liberation of eros is the fundamental way to release the chains of the individual and rebuild a non-repressive civilization, the key to which lies in the activation of erotic energy in the field of art through fantasy and sensuality. The third part deals with the dilemma of erotic liberation in the totalitarian rule of technology. In a one-way society, art and instinct are inevitably swallowed up and integrated by technological rationality, and the idea of erotic liberation has lost its effectiveness in the technological society. The focus of this section is on the evolution of the theory of “Eros liberation” from an aesthetic perspective. The New Left movement injected a political dimension into “Eros Liberation”,and Marcuse proposed the aesthetic theory of the “New Sensibility”,which meant that the theory of “Eros liberation” was transformed from the instinctual sphere to the political level of planning. As the New Left movement subsided,Marcuse withdrew to the field of art, seeking to achieve liberation through reliance on aesthetic form and artistic self-discipline.The fourth chapter examines the values and shortcomings of the theory of erotic liberation.Firstly, the theory of erotic emancipation expands the meaning of humanism through its insistence on the emancipation of individual instincts;the aesthetic point of nature in its technological outlook becomes a direct theoretical resource for “ecological Marxism”.Secondly, the theory of Eros is limited in three ways: its degenerate interpretation of Marx’s thought, its wavering revolutionary subject and its artistic supremacist fantasy.
