A Study Of The Transformation And Trend Of ROK-U.S.Alliance Under The Background Of Sino-U.S.strategic Competition

Sino-U.S.relationship is one of the most important bilateral relations in the current international system.The world order is increasingly focused on the changes and development of Sino-U.S.bilateral relationship.Since the 21 st century,the United States has gradually stepped into the declining period of the hegemonic cycle while China is rapidly rising as a great socialist power,which has triggered the competition between the established hegemon and the newly rising power on the international order.From December 2017 to January 2018,the publication of National Security Strategy and National Defense Strategy of the United States cleared and defined China’s “competitor” position.Since the Biden administration took office,the United States has further promoted the comprehensive deepening of strategic competition with China,and strategically emphasized the use of joint forces with allies to build a “united front”against China.In this context,the ROK-U.S.alliance has been further strengthened.The reconfirmation of the alliance relationship,the rapid reaching of the defense fee agreement and the deepening of cooperation in the supply chain and other fields are all strong proof of the close coordination of the ROK-U.S.alliance.Meanwhile,South Korea and the United States actively promote the construction of the “comprehensive alliance”,expanding the scope of alliance cooperation from the Korean peninsula to the Indo-Pacific region and even the world.The ROK-U.S.alliance has gradually moved closer to the ROK-U.S.-Japan trilateral mechanism and the “Quadrilateral Mechanism” of the United States,Japan,India and Australia,and the forms of cooperation has become increasingly diversified.With the transformation of the ROK-U.S.alliance,China-related issues has increased significantly.All the signs indicate that under the new situation,the ROK-U.S.alliance is undergoing a profound transformation.Based on the retrospection of the evolution of the ROK-U.S.alliance,this thesis comprehensively combs the changes of the ROK-U.S.alliance in the period of Sino-U.S.strategic competition,aiming to answer the following two key questions:What is the transformation of the ROK-U.S.alliance under the background of Sino-U.S.strategic competition? What is the trend of the ROK-U.S.alliance in the context of Sino-U.S.strategic competition? The study found that under the comprehensive influence of system pressure,the situation of the Korean Peninsula and the strategic considerations of South Korea and the United States,the cooperation between South Korea and the United States in various fields has been increasingly close,among which China-related issues have also increased significantly.As Sino-U.S.strategic competition becomes increasingly fierce,the Korea-U.S.alliance will continue to be strengthened in the future.In the face of the new changes of the ROK-U.S.alliance,China should seek countermeasures from both macro and micro perspectives.
