The vernacular short stories of the Ming Dynasty are a treasure in the history of ancient Chinese literature,with unique literary and linguistic art.The language of a certain period can reflect the social style and cultural heritage of a certain period.This paper takes 22 Ming vernacular short stories as the object of study,and on the basis of software word separation and statistical analysis using Python as the programming language,we sort out and explore the epithets appearing in Ming vernacular short stories to provide clues for an in-depth understanding of the cultural and social development of the Ming dynasty.This paper is divided into seven parts:The first chapter is the introductory part.It focuses on the object of study,the current state of research,and the purpose,significance and methodology of the study.In terms of the object of study,this paper takes the 22 Ming vernacular short stories that have been published and are currently in circulation as the object of study on the basis of the statistical summaries of previous authors;in terms of the current state of research,the academic community has conducted extensive research on Ming vernacular short stories,but in terms of the study of appellative terms alone,the research method is relatively single and lacks innovation;in terms of the purpose,significance and method of research,this paper hopes that through the study of Ming vernacular short stories The purpose,significance and methodology of this study are to explore the social and cultural customs of the Ming dynasty through the study of Ming vernacular short stories,and to provide new ideas for the study of Ming vernacular short stories through the innovation of research methods.The second chapter is devoted to the statistical characteristics of appellative words in Ming vernacular short stories.It focuses on the sources of appellative word data,the definition and classification of appellative words,the actual operation process of word classification and the statistical results of word classification.On the basis of the definition and classification of appellatives,the appellatives in the Ming vernacular short stories are divided into words.The main word-sorting software used is CUCBst 3.0,Jieba,pkuseg,and THULAC,which are based on the Python programming language,and several word-sorting software programs are used for more accurate word-sorting.In addition,word-sorting accuracy was also improved through processes such as importing a word-sorting dictionary and manual proofreading.After statistical analysis,there were 139,428 occurrences of appellative words in Ming vernacular short stories,with a total of 5,179 non-repeating appellative words.The third chapter is a study of kinship prepositions.Based on the large number of appellatives in the novels and their complex composition,the main categories of kinship appellatives appearing in the novels are paternal appellatives,maternal appellatives,marital appellatives,wife-based appellatives,sibling appellatives,children and grandchildren appellatives,cousin appellatives,cousin appellatives,and kinship appellatives combined and generic appellatives.The fourth chapter is a study of social epithets.In the light of the serious class division,the rise of the urban class and the prosperous economic development of the Ming dynasty,the social prepositions in Ming vernacular short stories are divided into social relationship prepositions,socio-professional prepositions,socio-religious prepositions and prepositions reflecting attributes.The fifth chapter is an enumeration of other types of appellatives.They include honorific and endearing terms that express respect and affection,derogatory and insulting terms that express anger and discontent,humble terms that express deference and humility,and nicknames that are summarised according to the characters’ characteristics.The sixth chapter is an exploration of the characteristics of appellatives and their cultural connotations in Ming vernacular short stories.On the whole,Ming vernacular short stories are characterized by inheritance,generalization of kinship terms,distinction between men and women,and coexistence of elegance and vulgarity.It also reflects the cultural connotations of the Ming dynasty’s emphasis on blood relatives,respect for the old and love for the young,and respect for officials.
