| Student Engagement is an important basis for detecting students’ learning participation and learning effect.At present,senior high school students generally suffer from English learning burnout,and the English learning engagement situation is relatively low,resulting in poor English learning effect.However,the “General Senior High School English Curriculum Standards”(2017 Edition)emphasizes that the overall goal of English courses in basic education is to cultivate students’ “comprehensive linguistic competence”.Therefore,it is essential to improve senior high school students’ English learning effect and linguistic competence.This study takes 256 students from two ordinary senior high schools in Hangzhou as the research subject,adopts a combination of qualitative and quantitative research method,conducts a questionnaire survey on students’ English learning engagement based on the UWES-S compiled by Schaufeli et al.,uses school tests to measure students’ English linguistic competence,and conducts interview with 6 of them,and combines with SPSS24.0 analysis,aiming to study the following three questions:(1)What is the current situation of senior high school students’ English learning engagement?(2)What is the current situation of senior high school students’ English linguistic competence?(3)What are the correlations between various aspects of senior high school students’ English learning engagement and English linguistic competence?The research results show that:(1)Currently,the senior high school students’ English learning engagement is generally good.Among the three dimensions of “vigor”,“dedication” and “absorption”,“dedication” is the highest,followed by “vigor” and“absorption”.From Senior Grade One to Three,Senior Two students have the highest level of English learning input and senior three the lowest.Female students’ overall English learning engagement and its three dimensions are all higher than male students’.(2)The overall situation of senior high school students’ English linguistic competence is good.Among the four aspects of “listening”,“speaking”,“reading” and “writing”,listening skills have the highest score and writing skills have the lowest score.Female students’ overall English linguistic competence and its four aspects are higher than male students’.(3)There is a significant linear correlation between senior high school students’ English learning engagement and linguistic competence in general;“vigor”has the greatest impact on students’ linguistic competence,“absorption” has the least impact.In addition,the level of students’ English learning engagement has a greater impact on reading and writing,and has the least impact on listening.Based on the research findings,this study puts forward the following suggestions:(1)Students should alternate study with rest to maximize the vigor of English learning engagement;(2)Students’ cognition of English learning should be changed from the heart;(3)Students should actively overcome multiple factors and maximize the level of absorption in English learning;(4)English teachers should improve their teaching methods,enhance the atmosphere of English learning in the class and improve themselves.(5)Parents should cooperate more with English teachers,provide more support for students’ English learning,and help students establish a correct view of English learning. |
