| In 2022,the curriculum standard of compulsory education in China regards the cultivation of students’ critical thinking as one of the goals of China’s new curriculum reform for the first time.Reading teaching has become an important way to achieve this goal.Domestic scholars have conducted a lot of research while there is less research on teaching methods to develop critical thinking in primary school English teaching.Based on this,this study investigated the development of critical thinking in primary school English reading courses using the PWP(Pre-reading,While-reading,Post-reading)interactive teaching model.The purpose is to explore:1)the current level of primary school students’ critical thinking;2)the effects on the development of the levels of students’ critical thinking after implementing the PWP interactive teaching model;3)the challenges faced by students in the process of critical reading.This study was conducted for three months with fifth grade students in Beijing X primary school,using the revised Bloom’s Taxonomy,schema and constructivism as theoretical guides.Questionnaire,observation and interview are the research methods.The experimental and control classes were taught respectively with PWP interactive model and PPP model.The results showed 1)Students were lacking critical thinking skills;2)The post-test results revealed considerable gains in Evaluate and Create in experimental class;Observations showed that students developed critical thinking in active classroom activities;3)the challenges faced by students include less knowledge,cognitive limitations,lack of awareness and the impact of learning environment.It is intended that this study will help students enhance critical thinking skills and serve as a useful resource for improving English reading instruction techniques. |
