Causes And Coping Strategies Of Disfluency In C-E Consecutive Interpreting

Interpreting is a complex information exchange activity,and non-fluent output is a common phenomenon.Fluent output is a key indicator to test the quality of interpreting.If the interpreting output is not fluent,it will affect the audience’s understanding of the source information,thus affecting the effective communication of the information,and will also make the audience question the interpreter’s interpreting ability and bring bad experience to the audience,so it is urgent to start solving the disfluency of interpreting.In view of this,in this practical report on interpreting,the author analyzes the causes of disfluency in Chinese-English consecutive interpreting with relevant cases and proposes strategies to cope with it,taking the mock Chinese-English consecutive interpreting of the China Chief Economist Forum as an example with Gile’s Effort model as a theoretical guide.The main contents of this thesis include research background and significance,literature review,case analysis,causes of disfluency phenomenon and coping strategies and conclusion.The author first conducted a mock interpreting practice and selected the phenomenon of disfluency in Chinese-English consecutive interpreting as the research object through post-interpreting reflection,then launched a literature review and selected the Gile’s Effort model of interpreting as a theoretical guide based on the shortcomings of existing studies.Then,the author introduces the Gile’s Effort model and uses it as a guide to analyze the causes of disfluency in Chinese-English consecutive interpreting(cognitive load,imbalance of effort distribution,and lack of linguistic expression)in the comprehension and production stage by selecting relevant cases.Accordingly,the author also proposes targeted strategies.Finally,the author summarizes this practice report,analyzes the limitations of the report,and makes relevant suggestions for future interpreters studying the disfluency field of interpreting.
