| In consecutive English interpreting,non-fluency often occurs especially excessive unnecessary pauses in interpretation.These will hinder the audience from receiving and understanding information and even make the audience question the professional level of the interpreter.In fact,non-fluency in Consecutive Interpretation is a common phenomenon because the interpreter has to perform multi-task processing and carry on a heavy mental workload.Even so,the interpreter must try his best to reduce the non-fluency in interpretation output.This thesis is an experimental report on the causes of MTI interpreting beginners’ nonfluency in English-Chinese consecutive interpreting and Chinese-English consecutive interpreting.This experiment selected one economic interpretation material from English to Chinese and one Chinese to English as the test materials.Then the author recruited 23 students from the Class of2021 of Capital University of Economics and Business to complete this experiment.The experiment explored the non-fluency phenomena and coping strategies in English-Chinese and Chinese-English interpreting through on-site tests,collection,and analyzing the subjects’ recording samples and interpreting notes.And in this thesis,the pauses of more than 0.5 seconds within sentences and pauses of more than 1.5 seconds between clauses or sentences were used as analyzed standards for identifying non-fluency phenomena.The results of this experiment show that the factors affecting non-fluency in English-Chinese consecutive interpreting and ChineseEnglish consecutive interpreting mainly include: lack of background knowledge,improper organization of the translation,lack of self-monitoring,and non-standard note systems.This thesis discusses the non-fluency phenomena and coping strategies in English-Chinese and ChineseEnglish consecutive interpreting and makes suggestions for MTI interpreting students at Capital University of Economics and Business to improve the quality of interpretation.Based on this experiment’s findings and the previous research results,the author proposes complementary corresponding coping strategies for the above four factors,such as enriching the preparation,controlling the speed of speech appropriately,strengthening self-monitoring,and improving personal note-taking system.This study has important inspirations and implications for the teaching of MTI interpreting and the training of interpreters. |
