Self-repair in interpreting is the phenomenon that happens when interpreters repair their output after self-monitoring.Understanding self-repairs and developing coping strategies for negative types of self-repairs is essential for improving the quality of interpretation.Based on the China-Aid Consecutive Interpreting Project"Seminar on Reform of Government Management for Egypt,”the author analyzed the self-repairs he made in the project and proposed strategies to cope with it.The "Seminar on Reform of Government Management for Egypt" is a China-Aid project, where the author served as an interpreter and project assistant. To identify the frequency and types of self-repairs,the author analyzed a classroom interpreting task(Task 1)from the early stage of the project and found that self-repairs in the task mainly include:error repairs, accuracy repairs, synonymous repairs, explicit repairs, and restart repairs.Among them, some were negative self-repairs that affected the quality of interpreting. Therefore, the author used coping strategies such as improving note-taking,deverbalization,and adding conjunctions. After using these strategies for a month, the author selected a classroom interpreting task(Task 2)of similar theme and duration to Task 1 and compared the self-repairs in the two tasks. It was found that the strategies mentioned above effectively reduced negative self-repairs.Through this report, the author gained a comprehensive awareness of different types of self-repairs and demonstrated the effectiveness of strategies for dealing with negative self-repairs.This report helps student interpreters identify and address negative self-repairs during interpreting with coping strategies provided for reference.
