A Report On The E-C Translation Of Identifying Potential Gaps In U.S.Coast Guard Arctic Capabilities (Appendix A-C)

With global warming,the Arctic is playing an increasingly important role in the development of world economy.The domestic demand for development experience in the Arctic region is increasing,which promotes the translation of relevant English materials into Chinese.The text Identifying Potential Gaps in U.S.Coast Guard Arctic Capabilities,as indicated by its title,mainly introduces the shortcomings of the U.S.Coast Guard’s capability in the Arctic region.Translating the text into Chinese will help us learn some of the U.S.development experience in the Arctic region.Like many other sci-tech English texts,this text contains many nominalization,long sentences and difficult sentences.Whether these are handled well will directly affect the quality of the whole translation.However,sci-tech English texts belong to informative texts,and the translation of such texts focuses on conveying meaning and does not require the target text to correspond to the original in form.Therefore,when handling these language phenomenon and sentences with different language expression habits,part-of-speech conversion,which relies on changing the original part of speech to make the translation conform to the syntax and language expression habits of the target language,can be used,so as to realize faithfulness to the original text in content.Although many predecessors have conducted researches on the part-of-speech conversion in sci-tech English texts,in many cases,part-of-speech conversion is only a small part of the research content,so the analysis is not deep enough and the types of part-of-speech conversion studied are also not comprehensive enough.Therefore,the author takes the Chinese translation of the sci-tech English text Identifying Potential Gaps in U.S.Coast Guard Arctic Capabilities(Appendix A-C)as an example,makes a study on how different parts of speech in sci-tech English are converted into Chinese verbs,nouns,adjectives and adverbs to solve the translation problems of nominalization,long sentences,difficult sentences and different language expression habits,and summarizes some rules.This will help to further enrich the study of parts-of-speech conversion in sci-tech English texts.
