| With the improvement of the strategic significance of the Arctic, the related strategies have been introduced and updated by Arctic states. As a participant and contributor in Arctic affairs,China’s active understanding of them will contribute to the promotion of international cooperation and the achievement of mutual benefit and win-win results between China and other Arctic states. Therefore, the translation of relevant military English materials plays an increasingly important role. There is a tendency to use more impersonal subjects in formal English comprared with Chinese and this obvious inequality poses certain difficulties and challenges to E-C translation. In view of this, chapter 5-6 of On Thin Ice: UK Defense in the Arctic is taken as the translation material and a detailed study of the specific E-C translation methods of impersonal subjects in military texts is conducted under the macro guidance of Functional Equivalence Theory. This report attempts to improve the classification of impersonal subjects in translation applications, systematically summarize a total of eight translation methods and analyze related example sentences in depth based on various factors such as differences in the way of thinking, syntax, and expression habits between China and the West so as to provide some reference for the translators in such field. |
