In the middle of the 19 th century,with the invasion of the empire and the opening of the Shanghai Concession,the overseas also brought their home country’s advanced living facilities and modern lifestyles,including sports life.Sports first entered the lives of women,and the earliest opportunity was to teach women to learn.After entering the20 th century,especially after the May Fourth Movement,with the popularization of women’s education,the objects of participation have expanded from elite groups to ordinary women.Women’s awareness of physical activity has gradually awakened,and a lifestyle emphasizing physical activity has begun to be advocated by women.The article uses historical data research method,text analysis method and case study method to make a simple definition of social class and use this as a criterion to study the sports lifestyles of women from different classes in Shanghai from 1919 to1949,so as to show women’s sports during the Republic of China.The real situation of development,and then discuss the significance of sports to women.Firstly,the origin of women’s sports lifestyle in the Republic of China is briefly reviewed.Secondly,according to the social status and occupation,the group of women in Shanghai during the Republic of China is roughly divided,and the motivation and purpose of women’s participation in sports activities are discussed.The focus is on the sports lifestyles of women from different classes in Shanghai after the May 4th Movement.Finally,it summarizes the characteristics and influence of female sports life in Shanghai during the period of the Republic of China.Results:(1)The origin of women’s sports lifestyle in Shanghai during the Republic of China was closely related to women’s early education.In the late Qing Dynasty,as the west wind spread to the east,the church women’s school brought the enlightenment of women’s sports.After the May 4th Movement,with the popularization of women’s education and the gradual development of sports culture,women’s sports activities have become more vigorous,and the participation objects have expanded from female students to ordinary women.Sports began to become a part of their daily life,subtly affecting their way of life.(2)The composition of the female group in the Republic of China: The upperclass women mostly came from the families of officials and merchants.They accepted Western concepts earlier,and their lifestyles and values were more enlightened and trendy.Middle-class women,including women from middle-class families,also include non-manual working women and female students in school,quite a few of them have middle-level education and have certain spending power.Lower-class women mainly refer to manual laborers,consisting of workers,coolies,etc.They have not received basic education and are not conscious of sports participation.(3)The motivation of women in the Republic of China to participate in sports came from both the patriotic enthusiasm at the national level and the needs at the individual level.It can be deeply understood from the following four aspects,namely,practicing social responsibility,demonstrating social status,promoting physical and mental development,and establishing interpersonal communication.(4)During the period of the Republic of China,there were differences in the degree and way of women’s participation in sports in different classes in Shanghai.There are two main ways for upper-class women to participate in sports.One is to personally participate in sports practice,with high consumption and fashionable sports as the main content;Middle-level women mainly rely on various intermediate associations to carry out sports,including comprehensive associations and special sports associations,including sports organizations established by schools.In addition to carrying out traditional Chinese sports activities through seasonal festivals,only some female workers have the opportunity to carry out sports practice through intermediary organizations.(5)During the period of the Republic of China,the sports lifestyle of Shanghai women had the characteristics of westernization,organization,spontaneity and imbalance.As a new way of life,sports provide a good opportunity for the transformation of women’s way of life and cultural prosperity.It not only helps to break through the social restrictions on women’s activity space in the past,provides a channel for women to earn a living and become independent,but also promotes the main body of women.Reconstruction of identity.
