The concept of overtranslation and undertranslation in translation practices refers to the bias of translation in terms of two factors —— text and culture, which leads to the discrepancy between the information carried by the translated text and that by the original text.Overtranslation tends to be embodied by prolix text or excessive illustration of the source language culture;while undertranslation is shown in sketchy text,or the loss of the information in the original texts due to the exorbitant emphasis on the target culture context. While in translating process, translators should not only optimize overtranslation and undertranslation with proper methodologies, but also notice the dialectic relation of overtranslation and undertranslation. The model of Edgeworth Box,however,as an economic model reflecting dynamic relations between two factors, can also be utilized into translation practice. It can assist translators in the understanding of textual and cultural influences, the analysis on overtranslation and undertranslation in translated texts, and the optimization from the aspects of text and culture. Thus,it can help translators to improve the quality of the translation. As a case study of the first and second chapters of Boom and Bust: A Global History of Financial Bubbles, this paper summarizes the embodiments of overtranslation and undertranslation in translation practices. At the same time,in order to guide the translating process and optimize the translated texts, this paper applies Edgeworth Box to the specific translation practice, and then summarizes four methodologies to optimize overtranslation and undertranslation.
