| Learning boredom is a negative sense of experience caused by students’ lack of interest in learning.For rural junior middle school students,English learning is often limited to English classroom.Although a consensus has been reached that the classroom environment has an impact on the process and outcome of second/foreign language learning,it’s still unclear how English classroom environment is related to the process of breeding negative emotions such as boredom among learners.Under such a circumstance,this study adopts a combination of quantitative and qualitative research methods,taking 480 students from Yiyang and Loudi rural junior middle schools as subjects,using methods with a combination of questionnaire survey and interview,and conducting descriptive analysis,independent sample T-test,correlation analysis and regression analysis to study the current situation and correlation between English classroom environment and English learning boredom in rural junior middle schools.And,15 rural junior middle school students are selected as interviewees randomly to further unveil the relationship between classroom environment and learning boredom.The results show:(1)Rural junior middle school students’ overall perception of English classroom environment is at a high level,especially the dimension of teacher support reaches the highest level,while the other three dimensions: peer cooperation,classroom equipment and class order are at lower and middle level.(2)The overall English learning boredom among rural junior middle school students is at a medium level,the two dimensions of high arousal and low arousal have reached a high level,and the two dimensions of disengagement and inattention are at lower and middle level.(3)Girls have a higher perception of English classroom environment than boys,especially in the two dimensions of peer cooperation and teachers’ support.But boys’ perception of overall and each dimension of boredom is generally higher than that of girls.(4)High-level students generally perceive English classroom environment better than low-level students,but low-level students generally have a higher perception of boredom than high-level students.(5)There is a significantly negative correlation between English classroom environment and English learning boredom,and the dimensions of classroom equipment and classroom order have the function of remarkably negative prediction of boredom in English learning.Based on the above results,this study recommends that the education departments should upgrade classroom equipment.Rural English teachers should strengthen classroom order management,optimize English classroom environment and then eliminate students’ English learning boredom,to promote their positive emotion of English learning and improve the quality of English teaching.At the same time,rural junior middle school students should change their English learning concept,position their English learning goals,and cultivate their interest in English learning. |
