Locative Narrative:Narrative Innovation And Cultural Imagination In The Age Of Mobile Media

Locative narrative is an emerging art practice of mobile media art in recent years.It is an artistic practice of narration in a certain physical space with applying positioning technology and mobile media.As a highly conceptual and experimental mobile media art practice,locative narrative has the value and significance to be explored in terms of artistic innovation and cultural function.It is also a typical example of interdisciplinary research in art and science,which can provide many useful inspirations.However,there are few related studies.Therefore,this paper investigates the locative narrative under the interdisciplinary perspective of the combination of art and science,sorts out its artistic origin and technical background,and identifies how its technical characteristics inspire new artistic expressions and cultural functions,with the intention of fully demonstrating the relationship between art and science in this case and its integration path,and also hoping to consider the relationship between art and science in the contemporary context and how to realize the integration of art and science beyond.The Introduction part introduces the background of this paper,the current status of domestic and international research,the research ideas and methods,and the significance and innovation of this paper.Chapter 1 provides a basic overview of locative narrative from the perspectives of background,concept definition,and basic types.Firstly,it examines the occurrence of locative narrative from the aspects of technology application,ideological background and artistic origin,pointing out that the development of locative technology and mobile media is an important technological background for locative narrative,spatial theory and post-modern cultural trends are the ideological and cultural background for locative narrative,and folk oral narrative tradition and art genres such as Land Art and Situationist International in the contemporary art trend also have an important influence on locative narrative.The second section identifies and defines the concept of locative narrative;the third section presents the basic types of locative narrative art practices and explains them separately.Chapter 2 is based on the interdisciplinary study of art and science,and examines how the technical characteristics of locative narrative have inspired and given rise to new artistic expressions,and what artistic characteristics and narrative innovations have been brought about.In the first section,by using elements analysis methods,the basic characteristics of the key technical elements of locative narrative,such as locating,mobility,interaction,and their expressive functions when applied to narrative are examined respectively;in the second section,the combination of the expressive functions analyzed in the previous section is further discussed in terms of which narrative innovations are brought about,thus analyzing the technical characteristics of locative narrative and their artistic features,including the following aspects: locating,mobility,and spatial narrative;data,cartography and trajectory visualization;interaction,networking and generative narrative.The third section attempts to present and explain the relationship between art and technology of locative narrative in a diagrammatic way.Chapter 3 focuses on the cultural significance and application of Locative Narrative.The first section,with the help of space theory,analyzes the social significance and cultural function of locative narrative.Using Henri Lefebvre’s theory of space production,it points out that locative narrative reconstructs the spatial relationship effectively in multiple senses,such as personal and daily life space,personal and public space,urban space and social space,knowledge and cultural space,etc.Through Edward Sawyer’s theory of the third space,this paper points out that the space constructed by locative narrative reflects the openness of Sawyer’s third space;The second section,combined with the characteristics of locative narrative,analyzes its application scenarios in urban culture construction,community culture establishment,cultural relics archaeology and heritage protection,historical and cultural heritage and digital presentation.The Conclusion part makes a summary of the whole paper.Overall,this paper examines the emerging media art of locative narrative in an interdisciplinary perspective of art and science,sorting out its artistic origin and technical background,and using the method of elements analysis to examine the technical elements of locative narrative,analyzing how its technical characteristics have inspired and shaped artistic innovation,considering its cultural meaning and function,and looking forward to its application prospects,so that to forming a comprehensive and in-depth overall grasp of locative narrative,,and to provide some reference ideas for the exploration of the integration of art and science through this example.
