A Report On The Chinese Translation Of 2020-2021 Shipping Energy Literature Under Translation Shifts Theory

The translation is guided by Translation Shifts Theory,and the examples are from several shipping energy literatures.The problems encountered in translation are addressed at the level of category shifts aiming to explore how to achieve the communicative purpose of the text,so as to facilitate the study of shipping energy literatures in maritime sector.The category shifts are divided into four varieties,of which structure shifts are mainly directed at the different syntactic structures in the English and Chinese languages;unit shift refers to the shift between translation units,often occurring at the word level,phrase level and sentence level;class shifts are shifts between lexical categories,such as the shift from English nouns to Chinese verbs;and intra-system shift,which refers to the shift occurring in the number system,personal pronoun system and symbol system.The translator selected five shipping energy literatures for Chinese translation.The source texts belong to maritime text,which has a lot of information and the style of science and technology,and the stacking of information may cause obstacles to the readers’ reading comprehension,and the long and complex sentences require the translator to make necessary shifts in the translation process.Under the guidance of category shifts,the author has carried out shifts between English’s hypotaxis and Chinese’s parataxis,syntactic structures,different levels and the same systems,achieving the effect of enhanced logic and authentic expressions.Besides,translation methods such as amplification,omission and repetition are also used to guide this translation study,so as to better complete the translation task and present a translation with the same rigorous style and smooth language as the original text,and better serve the readers of the target language.Based on this translation practice,the author finds that Translation Shifts Theory has a guiding role in the translation of maritime texts,and translators can combine several shift methods to flexibly process the text,thus improving the quality of the translation.
