A Report On The Textual Cohesion And Coherence In Translation Of Vaccine Hesitancy:Public Trust,Expertise And The War On Science

The present report is a study on the English-Chinese translation extracted from Vaccine Hesitancy: Public Trust,Expertise and the War on Science.The text falls into the category of popular science books of medicine,which is characterized by both specialty and popularity.With the guidance of the adaptation theory,the writer focuses on discourse cohesion and coherence,analyzes the translation problems and difficulties and probes into solutions to the reproduction of the information and cultural connotations behind the source language.The following conclusions are reached through case analysis:(1)Flexible translation methods are adopted for the different types of cohesive devices used in the text.Regarding cohesive devices of reference,substitution and ellipsis,the writer adopts several translation methods,such as retention,repetition and omission.As for conjunction and lexical cohesion,retention translation method is adopted to achieve the semantic cohesion.(2)Specific translation methods are adopted to reproduce coherence in the target text: addition,omission and the method of changing orders,making the translation logical and coherent.The translator needs to choose the appropriate translation techniques according to the specific context.The writer also draws inspiration from the translation practice,that is,translation is actually a process of rewriting.Apart from a good mastery of translation methods and techniques,translators need to process extensive knowledge and the accumulation of bilingual writing training in English and Chinese.
