| This report is based on a simulated Chinese-English simultaneous interpretation of a lecture Interpreting Zhejiang Entrepreneurial Spirit in the New Era to Promote the Transformation of Private Enterprises, which was delivered at a forum on October 16,2019.The lecture mainly tells classic stories of Zhejiang merchants to convey Zhejiang entrepreneurial spirit in the new era,and by analyzing some typical cases to help private enterprises accelerate transformation and upgrading and cope with more practical difficulties. In the process of simulated Chinese-English simultaneous interpretation, the author found that the speaker delivered an impromptu speech in the lecture. The contents of the source language are of strong colloquial features, with loose logic and poor coherence.By transcribing and analyzing the source text and the target text, the author found that the non-coherence in the source language made it difficult for the interpreter to convey information accurately and coherently. In the book Introduction to Discourse-oriented Translation(2001),Li Yunxing has made a discussion on non-coherence at three levels:within a sentence, within a sentence group and between sentence groups.Accordingly, the interpreter divides the difficulties caused by non-coherence in interpretation into three categories:(1)non-coherence within a sentence;(2)non-coherence within a sentence group;(3)non-coherence between sentence groups. In view of the above difficulties, the author discusses coping tactics for non-coherence in C-E simultaneous interpretation guided by Skopos Theory.Vermeer points out that Skopos Theory is an important translation theory, which is applicable to both translation and interpretation. This theory contains three rules, namely, skopos rule, coherence rule and fidelity rule.In the process of information exchanges in interpretation, the coherence rule plays an important role, and it is necessary and suitable to cope with the problem of non-coherence in the source language.Based on this point, the author puts forward six interpreting tactics for the above-mentioned three types of difficulties:(1)amplification and waiting to cope with the difficulty caused by non-coherence within a sentence;(2)correcting and reorganizing to cope with the difficulty caused by non-coherence within a sentence group;(3)supplementing and deleting to cope with the difficulty caused by non-coherence between sentence groups. In this report, under the guidance of Skopos Theory, the author discusses solutions and coping tactics for the difficulties caused by non-coherence in an impromptu speech of a lecture, hoping to provide helpful guidance and reference for dealing with similar problems in the future. |
