Zeng Guofan Rebuilt Tongcheng School In Nanjing

The Tongcheng School was once prosperous in Jinling,but it gradually declined after the battle of Xianfeng.In the fourth year of Tongzhi,Zeng Guofan,who had been learning from Tongcheng for a long time,became the governor of Liangjiang.He took a series of measures to rebuild the Tongcheng School in Jinling after the war,creating a new situation for the development of the Tongcheng School in the Qing Dynasty.Based on Zeng Guofan’s literary creation,academic thought and political activities in Jinling,this paper makes an in-depth study of his reconstruction of the Tongcheng School.The full text is divided into three chapters:The first chapter discusses the measures taken by Zeng Guofan during the Jinling period,continuing the township examination,repairing the academy,moving the Jinling Bookstore to Feixia Pavilion,and gathering famous scholars from all over the shogunate,highlighting Zeng Guofan’s historical contribution to laying a solid foundation of talents for the revival of the Tongcheng literary school..The second chapter focuses on Zeng Guofan’s transformation and practice of Tongcheng School theory in Jinling.He incorporated the spirit of the times and applied it to the Tongcheng School of "Yi Li",constructed a new theory of "Yi Li" with "inner benevolence and external propriety" as the core,and put it into practice in Jinling.He put forward the idea of adopting both the Han and Song Dynasties,which greatly enhanced the status of textual research in the Tongcheng School.In the post-reconstruction Tongcheng School group,he introduced scholars who were devoted to Sinology,laying an important foundation for the academic integration of the Tongcheng School.Under the situation of internal and external troubles and the urgent need to change the ancient literature of Tongcheng School,he followed Yao Nai’s theory of "masculine and feminine" to enhance its brilliance,put forward the concept of "eight beauties of ancient literature",and compiled "four images of ancient literature" for the reconstruction of Tongcheng The school constructed a new article aesthetic system.The third chapter briefly discusses the main activities of Zeng disciples and disciples in Jinling after Zeng Guofan’s death.
