A Translation Project Report On The Online Teaching Survival Guide Simple And Practical Pedagogical Tips(Excerpted From Chapter 6)

This paper is a practice report on the English-Chinese translation of The Online Teaching Survival Guide Simple and Practical Pedagogical Tips(2021)written by Judith V.Boettcher,a renowned online learning expert,and Rita Marie Conrad,a digital learning planner.The book mainly describes the basic elements and practical tips of online teaching,aiming to provide teaching strategies for novice online teachers and help them improve teaching efficiency and quality,so as to further mitigate the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on education.Chapter 6 of the book was chosen as translation material which mainly tells us what teachers need to do to prepare for the beginning of online courses.The original text of this practice report is an informative text of online teaching,which contains some educational terms.So,it is a highly professional text.It contains many passive sentences which objectively explain professional terms.Therefore,the translator needs to accurately convey the information of the original text and make the translation conform to the norm of the target language,so as to achieve the purpose of communication.Peter Newmark’s communicative translation theory is used in the report and the paper is analyzed from three aspects: vocabulary,phrase and sentence.The vocabulary section contains online teaching terms and common words.As for the former,in order to make it better received by the target language readers,the translator checks the exact meaning and provides background information to make the translation clearer and more accurate.As for the latter,the translator flexibly uses methods such as part-of-speech conversion and word’s extensive meaning to make the translation more authentic and more in line with readers’ reading habits.At the phrase level,the translator makes flexible use of amplification and free translation to make the meaning clearer.At the sentence level,the translator uses conversion from passive sentences to active sentences and adjustment of word order to make the translation more consistent with Chinese expression and more fluent.The accomplishment of this report has made the translator understand the guiding significance of Newmark’s communicative translation theory during the translation of informative text,and also improved the translator’s competence in translation.The translator hopes that the translation can really provide tips for online teachers.
