A Report On C-E Translation Of Chinese Farming Culture (Chapter Four)

This report is based on the analysis of C-E translation of Chinese Farming Culture(Chapter Four).Chapter four of the book mainly introduces China’s history-honoured rice farming culture,while the first section is about the domestication of rice and its contribution to Chinese culture,and the fourth section is about the Milu Deer(Elaphurus davidianus)and primitive rice farming culture and Chinese culture.The translation of these parts will help to better tell China’s rice farming stories to the world and contribute to promoting Chinese traditional farming culture.The source text selected for this translation project belongs to informative text with popular-science function.In terms of its contents,it involves a large number of terminologies and culture-loaded terms as well as numerous quotations of antient Chinese classics.From the perspective of its stylistic characteristics,it is not only similar to scientific text,which is rigorous and objective,but also contains literary writing techniques and expressions.Thus,to achieve the purpose of spreading Chinese rice farming culture,the target text should not only be more straightforward,more readable,but also more acceptable.Moreover,in order to achieve this specific communicative purpose,the author chooses functionalist skopos theory and flexibly adopts translation strategies and methods to make targeted efforts in solving problems in translation,exploring the significance and feasibility of skopos theory for English translation of texts related to Chinese rice farming culture.This report consists of four parts: the first part is the introduction to the translation project,including the background,purpose,significance and the organization of every part of the translation project;The second part mainly covers the details of the translation process in the order of pre-translating,translating and post-translating;The third part is that the translator analyzes how to choose the translation method to achieve the intended purpose under the guidance of the three rules of functionalist skopos theory from the levels of words,sentences and texts,combined with specific examples;In the fourth part,it is a summary of the translation experience accumulated in this translation practice,including the gains in this translation project,the self-reflection on the translator’s limitations,and suggestions for the future translation work.
