This is a report on simulated C-E simultaneous interpreting of Wen Tiejun’s speech entitled Looking back at a century of rural construction,focusing on rural revitalization,which was given in the program named Youth Online Courses on March 10,2021.The speech gave a clear illustration of the century-long history of China’s rural construction and analyzed the differences of the development modes between China and Western countries.Therefore,this material is helpful for people from western countries to understand China’s rural revitalization strategy and discard prejudices.The importance of the report requires that the accuracy and integrity of the information should be guaranteed and the process should be smooth.Due to the importance of the content of the speech,the source text characterized with rigorousness has been prepared in advance.In the speech,there are a total of 59 cases of pre-modifiers in the 60-minute speech,mainly as follows:(1)long attributives are placed in front of the headword;(2)adverbials are placed in front of the predicate.This difference in the word order and usage between English and Chinese increases the pressure of short-term memory for the interpreter and caused some difficulties in the organization of interpretation,resulting in the lack of information and inaccuracy of interpretation.Under the guidance of the Effort Model of SI proposed by Gile,six coping tactics are proposed to the difficulties in interpreting caused by long preposed attributives and preposed adverbials as follows.(1)The main strategies adopted for interpreting preposed long attributives are conversion,omission and chunking.(2)The main strategies adopted for interpreting preposed adverbials are subject retention,anticipation and sentence restructuring.Discussion on difficulties caused by pre-modifiers and relevant coping tactics may provide some worthy references for the practice of simultaneous interpreting on speeches with plentiful pre-modifiers.
