A Report On The Translation Of Dong Mingzhu:the Secret Of Gree’s Rising(Excerpts)

The translation report is based on the excerpt of Dong Mingzhu: the Secret of GREE’s Rising,which is co-authored by Wei Xin and Liu Yunfei,two scholars in the financial industry.With considerable facts and materials,the original text systematically presents how Dong Mingzhu rose from obscurity to a well-known Chinese entrepreneur of GREE Electric Appliances in a vivid and humorous language.The excerpt mainly focuses on a series of initiatives introduced by Dong Mingzhu after she was promoted to manager of GREE’s marketing department.The original work is a biography typified by both authenticity and literariness.Therefore,the translator should prioritize the retention of the two typical features.It requires her to pay more attention to accurate information and sensational descriptions of the source text,thus the original style can be reproduced and the sound reading effects can be achieved.To this end,Peter Newmark’s classification of text types and the proposition of semantic and communicative translation shed light on the report.In this paper,the translator firstly made an in-depth analysis of the biography’s text type and its textual features,and found that the biography stands out with its culture-loaded words,business terms,jargons,address terms,redundant information,ambiguous language,loose sentences and other expressive devices,all of which make the translation difficult.Under the guidance of Newmark’s theories,she figured out some suitable translation strategies,such as conveyance of original meaning,retention of original language style,omission and combination of redundant information and rearrangement of sentence structure,to address the difficulties mentioned above.Then she attempted to present a detailed analysis of the application of semantic translation and communicative translation in the case study.The main conclusion to be drawn from the paper is that,in the translation of biographical literature,semantic translation and communicative translation can be interchangeably employed and serve as a guide for selecting appropriate strategies corresponding with different contexts.Besides,there are some limitations subject to improvement in the report.The translator tried to offer some valuable suggestions and new insights into the translation of biographical literature.
