Ji Ben is a prominent representative of Yangmingism in the central part of Zhejiang Province. However, his approach to studying differs from that of most post-Yangming scholars.Although Ji Ben annotates classics, his approach focuses on using annotation as a tool for developing the mind.Although his path may differ,Ji Ben shares the same original intention as Yang Ming.Ji Ben’s dedication to interpreting scripture stems from his desire to refute the empty rhetoric of Wang Men’s disciples. After Yangming’s death,Ji Ben realizes that Yangming’s theory faced the problem of decomposing. In response,he suggested exploring classical texts and guarding Yangming’s theory of conscience through exegesis. This approach not only ensures the continuation of conscience discourse but also upholds the legitimacy and cohesion of the school.Ji Ben has written many works, including "Poetry to Explain the Yi," "Four with the Yi," "The Ancient Yi Bian," "Read Li Doubtful Map," and "Spring and Autumn Private Examination".The focus of this collection is the final work.Ji Ben believes that the purpose of Confucius’ "Spring and Autumn Annals" was to establish justice and prevent evil people from getting away with their crimes.Ji Ben,who respects Confucius and scripture, asserts that Confucius never wrote "Spring and Autumn Annals," but rather,it was written by his followers.Additionally, the third biography in "Zuo Shi" was a work of rebellion that did not focus on right or wrong.Ji Ben’s interpretation of the "Spring and Autumn Private Examination" involves being serious, sending Confucius, and upholding the true meaning of the king."As Confucian classics studies in the Ming dynasty progressed, there was a shift from "anti-intellectualism" to "intellectualism." Although textual criticism was not Ji Ben’s primary objective, his approach to interpreting the classics to maintain the study of conscience led to the development of textual research during the Qing dynasty.
