| James Legge was an English missionary-sinologist and also a very eminent translator for Chinese classics.Straddling his life,he created and translated plenty of works,just like the stars shining in the sky.The Chinese classics he rendered have contributed to spreading Chinese culture to the west and built a bridge for communication between Chinese and western cultures.Up to now,numerous scholars have been studying James Legge and his translated works.The report is conducted based on the English-Chinese translation of the preface and introduction in the first volume of The Sacred Book of China written by James Legge published in 1879.Based on the theory of intertextuality and with the help of literature research and interdisciplinary research,the report aims to discuss and analyze the difficulties encountered in translation,as well as the influence of intertextuality on the understanding of the source text and word selection during the period of translation.At the same time,the author makes a summary of the pinyin system for The Sacred Book of China series,so as to provide reference for later arrivals and reduce the obstacles of reading.Through this report,the author hopes to provide some references for the scholars who study Sinology and James Legge.At the same time,it also provides reference for the translation strategy of academic preface and introduction of Chinese classics in the future.Through translation practice and case analysis,this report believes that intertextuality is the prerequisite for correct understanding of the source text and the basis for careful the choice of words.Intertextuality can ensure the accuracy of the target text to a large extent.It not only adds a lot of necessary background knowledge to the readers and expands the meaning of the source text,but also enables Chinese and Western cultures to resonate to a greater extent,which is conducive to the communication and exchange of Chinese and Western cultures,providing a better way for Chinese culture to go global. |
