Classical oil painting is one of the important schools of Western art history, originating from the Renaissance period in Europe.During this period, people began to rediscover ancient Greek and Roman art and integrate it into modern art, forming a unique artistic style and expression.Oil painting was widely used in the European Renaissance period and became one of the most popular art forms at that time. From the Renaissance period, artists began to use light and shadow to depict the form and three-dimensional sense of objects.Through continuous practice and exploration, they developed and improved the theory and techniques of light and shadow modeling, making classical oil painting an important branch of Western painting history. In classical oil painting, light and shadow modeling is a crucial aspect.By using light and shadow, artists can portray the features of objects, such as form, texture, depth, and three-dimensionality.Through different ways of handling light and shadow, classical oil paintings can present different artistic effects, achieving different artistic expressions. For example, during the European Renaissance period, artists used strong contrast between light and dark and bright highlights to depict the form and texture of objects, making the picture more realistic and three-dimensional.During the seventeenth, eighteenth, and nineteenth centuries in Europe, artists began to focus on the use of natural light, observing the changes in natural light to depict the light and shadow effects of objects, achieving a more realistic effect.Light and shadow are important elements in classical oil painting, which can not only shape the form of objects and construct the relationship between light and dark in the picture but also balance the overall color and construct a rich spatial hierarchy. Therefore, many oil paintings use light and shadow elements. In different periods, painters have different ways of using light and shadow, reflecting different aesthetics. In painting application, light and shadow are not separate but are visual elements that compose together. Therefore,by handling the details of light and shadow, artists can form a variety of light and shadow modeling styles and then reflect different themes. The study of light and shadow modeling in classical oil painting is a very important research field, involving art, culture, history, technology, and other aspects.By studying the light and shadow modeling in classical oil painting,we can better understand the creation ideas and techniques of ancient artists and provide references and inspirations for the development of modern art. This article mainly studies the principles and application of light and shadow modeling in classical oil painting, the development of light and shadow modeling in classical oil painting, modeling application, and style expression,as well as inspirations for one’s own creation. In the first part, this article analyzes the principles of light and shadow modeling, mainly including the factors such as the position, intensity, and angle of the light source that affect light and shadow modeling.Through the analysis of application works, this article points out that light and shadow modeling can influence the shaping of form, the impact of light and shadow, and the balance of color. In the second part, this article studies the development of light and shadow modeling in classical oil painting. This article mainly analyzes the development of light and shadow modeling during the Renaissance period, the seventeenth, eighteenth, and nineteenth centuries, and the modern period. It also explores the modeling application and style expression of light and shadow modeling in classical oil painting, mainly including the effects on space and hierarchy and the unique style expression. In the third part, this article analyzes the inspiration of light and shadow modeling for one’s own creation, including the inspiration for composition, theme, and the handling of light and shadow details. Finally,in the conclusion part, this article summarizes the importance of light and shadow modeling in classical oil painting and points out that light and shadow modeling plays an important role in enhancing the level and spatiality of paintings and shaping unique style expressions.Through the analysis of this article,it is believed that in classical oil painting, light and shadow play a significant role in enhancing the hierarchy and spatiality of the painting,as well as creating unique style expressions. In classical oil painting, light and shadow are important means of depicting the form and three-dimensionality of objects.By using different light and shadow processing methods, artists can make the painting more realistic and three-dimensional,increasing its depth and hierarchy, thereby enhancing the artistic value and viewing experience of the work.Specifically,in classical oil painting, artists often use light and shadow to express the texture and texture features of objects. For example,by processing the brightness and darkness of the object’s surface at different degrees, viewers can feel the different texture characteristics of the object, such as roughness or smoothness, delicacy or coarseness. In the painting, different objects have different light and shadow processing methods, showing their unique textures and features. In addition, light and shadow modeling can also help artists to create unique style expressions. Therefore,in practical classical oil painting, the application of light and shadow modeling combined with reality has great practical value.
