With the advent of the era of grand theatres, theatres are no longer just platforms for the exhibition of performing arts, but have become art spaces with their own production capacity. The change in theatre function has made most theatres realise that a single business model that relies on imported productions is not conducive to the long-term development of theatres, and that self-production has gradually become the new direction of development for theatres. With the advent of the era of big data, industries are beginning to focus on user needs, and the marketisation of the performing arts is gradually deepening. This paper argues that theatres need to integrate a product-oriented mindset when developing their own productions.Product-oriented thinking can deepen the theatre’s focus on audience needs and strengthen its service functions.Under the guidance of product thinking, this paper draws on Kotler’s product hierarchy theory and suggests that theatre productions need to be created from the perspective of the consumer.Through audience research, this paper explains the desired and potential products of performing arts products. In addition, through research on the self-produced productions of the Shanghai Concert Hall and the Shanghai Culture Square, the paper argues that the creation of a theatre production and management model with "performing arts products" as its core requires theatres to innovate in terms of production processes and organisational design.
