| Japanese poetry monks have been imitators,learners and innovators of Chinese poetry under the combined influence of Buddhism and Chinese studies,and they have never left the stage of Japanese poetry.As a literary expression of the poet-monk,Japanese monk poetry records the state of his life and carries the journey of his heart.A study of Japanese monks and monastic poetry as a whole can therefore help to examine the uniqueness of Japanese monks as creative subjects and restore the richness of Japanese monastic poetry,thus analysing its significance for the development of Japanese Chinese poetry.In addition to the introduction and the conclusion,the paper is proposed to be divided into seven chapters.The first chapter briefly outlines the development of Japanese Buddhism,and looks at the concepts of “no words” and “meaning in words”,“direct reference to the human heart” and “wonderful enlightenment” and the “Buddhist protector of the nation”,as well as the “impermanence of all actions”and the “material sorrow and mystery”“ aesthetic ideal.” The second chapter examines the interaction between Japanese Buddhism and poetics on four levels,thus exploring the background of the creation of Japanese poetic monks.In the second chapter,the group of "Japanese poet monks" is divided into "visiting monks" and "local monks",based on the perspective of the creative subjects.This chapter recovers the social environment and national customs,family environment and educational background,life experiences and character qualities of the poet monks.Chapters 3 to6 take the staging of Chinese poetry as the weft.The content,artistic characteristics and literary contributions of monastic poetry in the dynastic,Gosan,Edo and Meiji periods are examined.A longitudinal comparison is made alongside an overview of monastic poetry in each period,thus presenting the development and evolution of monastic poetry in Japan.Chapter 7 explores the cultural significance of Japanese poets and monks and monastic poetry.From the perspectives of politics and religion,Confucianism and Buddhism,and the East Asian monastic poetry circle,the paper presents a picture of Japanese poets and monks doing their best to build up the flourishing of local monastic poetry.The paper concludes with a compilation of Japanese monastic poetry,a short biography of a Japanese poet and monk,and an anthology of Japanese monastic poetry in the form of appendices,in an effort to visually restore Japanese poets and monastic poetry.When Buddhism was introduced to Japan as a foreign religion and combined with the local religion,it did not assume a subservient posture,but took on the connotations of Shintoism as the main body and gradually developed.Because of this,the development of Japanese poets and monks was not suppressed by the traditional culture,but penetrated downwards into Japanese society and traditional culture.Most of the famous Buddhist monks were well versed in the scriptures and histories of various sons,and most of the founding fathers were poets and monks with a deep knowledge of Chinese poetry at the time.The environment and the individual will of the monks shaped the poets and monks of different eras as a whole as well as the individual poets and monks of the same era.Moreover,the essence of Chinese poetry condensed by the poet-monks is not an unchanging imitation of the Chinese Zen-Confucian cultural model,but a combination of the local Buddhist Zen doctrine and the experience of life put into Chinese poetry after internalization.The search for support,the search for the self and the search for Japan in Chinese poetry has become the ultimate guide for the creation of Japanese poet monks. |
