| The countryside has always been a central theme in the history of Chinese literature, and it has undergone great changes since the New Era.Characters are the soul of the novel in the process of its creation, and the creation of characters is both a central aspect and a kind of culturally connoted statue of the spirit of the times. As an indispensable part of the literature of the new era,the characters of the countryside are inevitably interwoven with the changes in society and undergo great changes in the process of social transformation,so that the image of the characters of the countryside becomes an important symbol of the expression of the times. They walk through the fog of time, moving from the countryside to the city, living in corners that are not illuminated by lights.Against the backdrop of rapid urbanisation and the revival of the countryside,as the new century enters its second decade, the development of the countryside has entered a new stage. In the works written on poverty alleviation, various rural characters appear, including both grassroots cadres and local farmers. It is through these characters that we can see the confusion, survival and spiritual condition of the people under the clash of urban and rural civilisations. They carry important contents such as the theme of literary creation and the spirit of the times of that period, and have important social and literary significance. This paper explores the relationship between urban and rural civilisation by focusing on the contradictions and intersections between urban and rural civilisation through rural characters in the recent literature of the turn of the century, and discusses them from three aspects: character image, writer’s creation, and artistic techniques.By analysing the portrayal of rural characters in the novels of the new century, the study reveals their journey under the circumstances of the new era.The introductory chapter presents the background to the study, the importance and value of the subject, and an introduction to the study of urban-rural relations and characterisation in the new century, with an overview of the current state of research on rural characters in fiction. The first chapter mainly analyses the emergence of two types of images, the strivers who enter the city and the attackers who get rid of poverty,in the social development towards the city.On the one hand,it discusses the relationship between peasants and the countryside, showing the survival situation and obstacles that peasants face after leaving the countryside and moving to the city, and also discusses the differences between the new generation of peasants and the previous generation, reflecting the changes of the times. On the other hand, with the introduction of the idea of "precise poverty alleviation",many leaders have emerged in the countryside to lead the countryside out of poverty. In addition, those who have left the countryside and returned to build their hometowns are also worthy of attention, and they have injected new energy into the modernisation of the countryside.Chapter 2 focuses on anxiety from the perspective of the creative subject and explores the characters’ identity anxiety as well as the writers’ ethical and ideal anxiety in their creation.Identity anxiety is a common problem faced by peasants after entering the city. They strive for urban registration and change their appearance to gain recognition in urban society, but the fear of not being able to integrate spiritually is the most "fatal".Ethical anxiety is an important manifestation of the clash between urban and rural civilisations.By writing about the ethical and moral dilemmas that the rural characters suffer from the clash between urban and rural civilisations, the writer expresses his concern and anxiety about ethics and reflects on the disorder of social ethics, and at the same time we can see the writer’s difficult choice between the two civilisations in the process of urbanisation.Idealist anxiety arises from the contradiction between the writer’s ideal and reality. The contradiction between the writer’s pursuit of a humanist ideal and reality causes him anxiety, but no matter what kind of anxiety it is,it is the writer’s anxiety about the spiritual status of the rural characters. The third chapter is devoted to an analysis of the methods used to create rural characters.Firstly,it explores how rural characters can be portrayed in the context of the new century, free from their monolithic faces, and how the multiple faces of rural characters can be expressed through the complexity of characters and the portrayal of different aspects.Secondly,it focuses on the "people’s character" and the creative work of novels in the new century, emphasizing the characteristics of the "people’s character" in the characters and the spirit of the times of walking with the people. Finally,it explores the new narrative perspectives of the new century from the point of view of narrative technique, and examines the real society from a unique point of view, paying attention to the daily life narratives of the novels of the new century, activating the daily lives of rural characters and restoring the neglected personal and spiritual history. |
