Lu Xiangshan was a famous Confucianist in the Southern Song Dynasty. He is famous for his academic proposition that "the heart is the moral law".He inherited Mencius’ thought, and had disagreements with Zhu Xi on some issues, which inspired Ming Dynasty philosopher Wang Yangming. Therefore,we can use the latitude of history and his letters with scholars and quotations to study Lu Xiangshan. For Lu Xiangshan, the "original heart" is undoubtedly one with the moral law,and it is also the logical starting point of his system of theory. However,Lu Xiangshan never had a deeper thought, which led to his theory being described as "empty" by later generations. Moreover, the main carrier of Xiangshan’s thoughts are letters from scholars and quotations from conversations with disciples,so the overall explanation of self-cultivation theory is missing. This has led to the lack of systematic and possible discussion of Lu Xiangshan’s theory of self-cultivation by scholars. It can be deduced from this that it is very necessary to study the conceptual premise of the original heart and to systematically sort out Lu Xiangshan’s theory of moral cultivation. Therefore, the main questions that this article tries to solve are "Is the original heart the moral law?" and "How is the theory of self-cultivation possible?" The key to the first problem I try to solve is to conduct an in-depth discussion on Xiangshan’s "original heart" thought, the purpose of which is to point out that his "original heart" thought is not a preset proposition. After discussing the first key issue, the second part of this article describes in detail the fall of the original heart due to interests and the rise due to the moral law.I describe the state of being that Lu Xiangshan has reached for his ascent as: "the state of being where the heart and the universe are one","the state of being without burden" and "the state of being with complete morality".The second key problem to try to solve is to sort out his theory of self-cultivation,so as to be able to discover the limiting conditions and find the conditions that make the theory of self-cultivation possible."Original heart" is the starting point and the end point of Lu Xiangshan’s self-cultivation theory. This article analyzes Lu Xiangshan’s theory with "original heart" as the core concept, and explains his theory with the framework of "interest" and "morality".And I take the process of falling and rising of "original heart" as the logic of this article.I want to systematize Lu Xiangshan’s theory through in-depth thinking on the concept of "original heart",detailed description of ideal personality, and combing of self-cultivation theory.
