| In the mid-20th century,Greenberg Rosenberg and Steinberg are known as the "three bergs" of American contemporary art criticism. They have clashed from time to time in the field of art criticism and made achievements in theory and criticism. At that time, the field of American culture and art also followed the ideological requirements.Greenberg wrote in the party review A series of articles published on the were hot for a while.Subsequently, the academic research on Greenberg and his influence is obviously more focused.Steinberg has gradually become a hot spot in recent years. However, the attention to Rosenberg has always been insufficient, and the value and significance of his artistic criticism have yet to be fully understood and explored. While working for New York magazine,Rosenberg published a large number of art review articles, involving the reflection on the hot spots of contemporary art and the prediction of the development trend of art at that time.At present, the domestic research on Rosenberg mainly focuses on action painting theory and abstract expressionism, less on Rosenberg’s critical theory system architecture and its critical reflection behind it.By restoring the focus of the critical debate at that time, combined with the different ideas of Rosenberg and Greenberg on the interpretation of specific artistic problems and phenomena, supplemented by comparative research, this paper attempts to comprehensively analyze and sort out Rosenberg’s theory and its significance. The first chapter expounds Rosenberg’s main artistic thought and its foundation, traces the appearance of the initial shaping period of action painting theory, and deeply excavates the philosophical influence from existentialism.Rosenberg defended the new art with his wise insight, creatively put forward the concept of "action painting",and announced that art will change from the static expression of wall painting to dynamic events. This concept formally affirmed the value of early incidental art and laid a theoretical foundation for the later development of performance art.The second chapter focuses on the confrontation and debate between Rosenberg and his opponents and friends in the field of criticism.By investigating the differences in his social and academic exchanges and discussions, especially the three debates between Rosenberg anGreenberg,we find that Rosenberg outlines and constructs a new method of art criticism in interviews and debates again and again. The third chapter deeply analyzes the methods and norms of Rosenberg’s new art criticism mentioned above. This paper focuses on the articles and interviews published by Rosenberg at the "Education Forum" in 1966,restores how Rosenberg absorbs experience and value from tradition, and finally provides a defense and theoretical barrier for modern new art works and new ideas. It involves Rosenberg’s views on popular culture, how to criticize and reflect on kitsch art under the impact of mass culture, and even how art should conform to the context of globalization and its new cultural standards. The fourth chapter focuses on Rosenberg’s reflection on the current social culture,as well as the unique value and significance of this reflection today. The reflection on art history, the new definition of the function and value of Contemporary Art Museum and curator, especially Rosenberg’s affirmation and praise for adding cultural significance and value to art works and artists, has opened a new space and field for the later academic discussion on the transformation of curator’s identity and function. Finally, the full text summarizes Rosenberg’s forward-looking role in the embryonic form of the development of new art history,as well as the problems existing in the teaching of art history.Rosenberg put forward a series of reflections, whether on art history, mass media or art galleries,or even the critical environment, the influence of curators, etc.the proposal and discussion of these problems and views not only promote the process of American modern art,but also are of great significance to the art and cultural ecology in the current global context. |
