There is a strong demand for artificial intelligence technologies in the management of public health emergencies. This thesis is a translation report of a scientific and technical text.Taking the E-C translation of Machine and Deep Learning towards COVID-19 Diagnosis and Treatment: Survey,Challenges, and Future Directions as an example, the report explores the specific translation methods of scientific and technical texts under the guidance of Peter Newmark’s Text Typology.According to Newmark’s text typology, texts can be divided into informative texts, expressive texts and vocative texts based on language functions. He further proposed two translation methods-communicative translation and semantic translation, and different translation methods should be employed according to different text types of the source texts.Machine and Deep Learning towards COVID-19 Diagnosis and Treatment: Survey,Challenges, and Future Directions is an informative text.At the lexical level, the source text is highly specialised, with more terms and expressions in the fields of artificial intelligence and medicine,as well as a large number of acronyms;at the syntactic level, long and complex sentences, passive sentences and nominalization are frequently adopted, which embody the objectivity and preciseness of the source text;at the textual level, there are a few articulated words in the source text, and the linking relationships are implied in the meaning of the sentences and in the context. Moreover, due to the high professionalism, the logical relationships such as contrast, transition, progression and cause and effect are not clear in the text. Therefore, translators need to accurately convey the meaning of the source text and ensure that the term is translated correctly, while making the translation style as close as possible to the style and expression of medical texts and AI-related texts. This report falls into five chapters. The first chapter gives a brief introduction to the background and significance of the project and structure of the report. The second chapter discusses Newmark’s text typology and the studies on the translation of English scientific and technical texts. The third chapter presents a detailed analysis of the source text at lexical, syntactic and textual levels under the guidance of Newmark’s text typology. The fourth chapter explores the accurate translation methods and techniques of scientific and technical texts through specific cases. Finally, the fifth chapter summarizes the experience of the translation practice and identifies the aspects for improvement.,with a view to providing some suggestions and assistance for the future translation of scientific and technical texts.
