Margaret Drabble is a contemporary British academic female writer with a high reputation in academic circles. She has a knack for integrating her personal life experiences into a broad socio-historical space and time, focusing on social illness of the day.Moral and social issues have always been the major concern for Drabble. The Ice Age,as Drabble’s transformative work, contains a broad range of social realities.Based on the above background, this thesis proposes to conduct a study of the community consciousness of The Ice Age.The first chapter of this thesis briefly introduces Margaret Drabble and the novel The Ice Age,introduces the current state of domestic and international research on the work, and points out the research structure and significance of the thesis. The second chapter mainly focuses on the absence of a sense of community in The Ice Age,mainly in terms of lack of faith, moral disorder, and alienation of interpersonal relationships.By critiquing these phenomena, the author conveys her appeal to the community. The third chapter specifically elaborates on the idea of the construction of community consciousness in the novel, expanding from the exploration of the identity of the main characters in the novel to the concept of the community of the group, and further exploring on the main community consciousness thoughts that Drabble implies in the novel. The fourth chapter delves into the reasons for Drabble’s writing about community, attempting to reveal the author’s reasons for writing about it in terms of her biographical background and life experiences. The concluding section of Chapter five not only summarizes the main arguments of the thesis but also reflects on Drabble’s idea of community consciousness in The Ice Age,which is a reflection of the Britain revival. The study concludes that the work is not only a broad description of the current state of society but also encompasses the author’s exploration of the construction of Englishness.Drabble infuses her novels with personal feelings and contemporary social realities, participating in a shared national memory of the British people and contributing to a sense of identity and community among the British people. This novel reveals her reflections on Englishness, providing a powerful legacy of British cultural identity and a response to the British social community.
