As the core resource of English curriculum,English textbook is the main content and carrier of English course,and plays an important role in teaching.Since the curriculum reform,from "one program and one version" to "one program and many versions",textbook versions have become diverse,which also makes experts and scholars pay more attention to the research of textbooks.Especially in the current society,with the development of quality-oriented education and the introduction of the New Curriculum Standards,higher requirements are put forward for the compilation and use of textbooks,and all these sectors make society pay high attention to the selection and quality of textbooks.Therefore,the study of textbooks is extremely important.Reading text is an extremely important part of English textbook,which is of great benefit to students to understand knowledge and develop language ability.Therefore,high quality reading text is of great significance for improving students’ language ability.In this study,the reading texts of the PEP edition and FLTRP edition of junior high school are selected as the research objects.According to Taylor’s textbook evaluation theory,the author analyzes the reading texts in the two versions by both internal evaluation and external evaluation.In the internal evaluation,the author compares the data of the subject context,genre,text length and legibility of the reading texts in the two versions by means of content analysis method,and summarizes the similarities and differences.The external evaluation is based on 141 teachers and students who use the PEP version and 148 teachers and students who use the FLTRP version as the research objects.Through the questionnaire survey of teachers and students,the evaluation of teachers and students on the reading text of the two versions of textbooks is satisfying,and the cognition of the two editions of textbooks from both subjective and objective aspects is deepened.This thesis tries to answer two questions: first,what are the characteristics of the reading texts of the PEP edition and the FLTRP edition and what are the similarities and differences between the two versions? Second,how do teachers and students evaluate the two versions of the textbooks?It is found that the two versions have the following similarities: Firstly,the length of the two textbooks increases with students’ promotion.Secondly,the reading content of the two editions is diverse,and the subject context covers three categories:man and nature,man and society,and man and self.Thirdly,the two editions have various genres,including all the eight genres mentioned in the New Curriculum Standards.Fourthly,reasonable readability,the texts are suitable for junior high school students to learn.There are the following differences: First,compared with the FLTRP edition,the reading text of the PEP edition is more extensive in the coverage of subtopic groups,and the readability span is large.Second,compared with the PEP edition,the reading text of the FLTRP edition is longer and the readability fluctuates greatly.Third,in terms of genre,the two versions have their own characteristics.According to the statistics and analysis of the questionnaire results,the following conclusions are drawn: Firstly,both teachers and students are very satisfied with the two versions,and both of the two versions are adapted to the reading level of students in this stage.Moreover,both of them are highly connected with students’ previous knowledge,and the types of reading text are diverse and the legibility of reading texts is reasonable,which can greatly improve students’ reading ability and writing ability.Secondly,the illustrations of the reading texts in the FLTRP version can help students understand the reading texts,play an effective role in the improvement of students’ reading ability,and better enable students to learn foreign culture.Finally,the theme of the reading text of the PEP edition is more appropriate to students’ life,the length is more reasonable,which can better enable students to learn Chinese culture.
