Second-language graded readers can provide learners with appropriate language input and a more enjoyable reading experience, and their compilation purposes, concepts and modes are worth exploring. This paper selects My Little Schoolbag Leveled Chinese Readers and Black Cat English Graded Readers, and examines them in three dimensions: content selection, language difficulty and auxiliary resources through quantitative statistics and comparative analysis methods,so as to update the previous impression that Chinese second-language graded readers are not mature enough. At the same time, with the help of the qualitative description of children’s language obtained in child developmental psychology, the compilation rules of the two sets of reading materials were explored, and the application effect of graded readers was investigated from the perspective of psychology. The existing research have concluded that Chinese graded readers have different degrees and aspects of problems, while through this research the author finds that with continuous exploration and practical summaries, the newly published My Little Schoolbag Leveled Chinese Readers in China has made up for the shortcomings and there is no obvious gap between Black Cat English Graded Readers developed under a mature system. And It can be used as a mature model in terms of subject matter, style, interestingness, language difficulty control and grading basis.Of course, there are still many good experiences in foreign second-language graded readers that are worth learning from,so this article also summarizes six points that can be improved in My Little Schoolbag Leveled Chinese Readers to make our second-language graded readers go to a higher level. In addition, this paper has identified at least eight conditions for high-quality graded readers from the comparison, hoping to provide reference for the development of second-language graded readers. Finally, this paper finds that the research on the promotion of graded readers in public libraries and their application in second language teaching is not in-depth enough, and it can be further explored to promote the all-round development of graded readers in China.
