A Practice Report On Escort Interpreting At Humble Administrator’s Garden

Suzhou Classical Gardens,also known as “Suzhou Gardens,” are the general name for the classical Chinese gardens in Suzhou City,Jiangsu Province.Suzhou classical gardens could date back to the Spring And Autumn Periods,developed in the Jin and Tang Dynasties and flourished in the Ming and Qing Dynasties.The Chinese philosophy,history and humanistic customs contained in Suzhou Classical Gardens,is the symbol of the traditions and local customs of Jiangnan,and this symbol also showing the essence of Chinese culture,which having a unique historical position and great artistic value in the history of world gardening.The classicalgardens of Suzhou,represented by the Humble Administrator’s Garden and the Lingering Garden,are known as "recreating cosmos within walking distance",are the pride of Chinese garden culture.The author’s foreign friend Trevor Pugh came to Suzhou on a business trip,and in his spare time,he asked the author to take him to visit the representative attractions of Suzhou.The author took him on a tour of the Humble Administrator’s Garden,a representative of Suzhou gardens,and conducted an escort interpreting practice.From this escort interpreting practice report,the author found many things that could be improved in the interpreting process.For example,too many kinds of words,diverse sentence patterns,and buildings’ name containing a unique ecological culture,all may affect the author’s performance during the interpreting;Some poems and allusions have their particular cultural connotations could also confused the author;In the process of interpreting,the message that the source speaker wants to convey is not conveyed to the listener,or the listener’s way of thinking is not followed,so that the listener cannot fully understand the translated content.This report summarizes problems mentioned above and reflects on causes of them.Under the guidance of Eco-Translatology,through three-dimensional transformation method,this study discusses the problems that arise during the interpreting process and how to optimize the interpreting effect from totally seven categories: vocabulary,syntax,and description in the language dimension,understanding and transmission in the cultural dimension,and emotions and intentions in the communication dimension.This report provides a theoretical reference for the translation of many cultural-loaded words in the interpreting process.And this report could also play a specific role in helping future interpreting work.
