With the development of society and the advancement of art history, the public has become more and more self-aware of art,and the aesthetic judgement of oil painting is no longer confined to traditional figurative life drawing works, but abstract expression works have gradually entered people’s view. The viewer is not only asked to look at the effect of the picture, but also to consider the spirit behind the work;or to put aside all the content of the picture and focus only on the beauty of the form of the work itself. The artist is therefore required to use abstract thinking to narrate the real world in a general way,and to be simple and concise about the objects he sees. The colour block is the most appropriate medium to refine the picture, and the colour block composition is an important factor in the balance of the picture,as well as an important carrier of the artist’s emotional expression. This paper takes the colour block composition as an entry point, which is a unique and important formal language, and analyses the beauty of both colour and shape of the ’colour block’,using the aesthetic principles of design composition to comprehensively analyse the way the colour block is composed and the impact of the colour relationship in the composition on the effect of the picture,in order to find more possibilities for improving the aesthetic meaning of the picture. The first part is a breakdown of the concept of colour block composition, with separate explanations of ’colour block’ and ’composition’;the second part is an overview of Sta(?)l’s artistic history;the third part is a general analysis of Sta(?)l’s formal language, followed by an analysis of colour block composition in the context of design theory. The third part analyses Sta(?)l’s formal language in general, and then uses design theory to analyse the application of flat composition and three-dimensional composition in the picture, and then explores the formal connotations of the colour block in terms of its colour, shape, texture and layout;the fourth part is about the influence of Sta(?)l’s use of the colour block on modern oil painting and the author’s creation, and explains how the author further explored his own painting language in learning the rules of colour block composition.
