Research On The Application Of Narrow Reading In Junior High School English Reading Teaching

In English teaching,reading is very important so English reading teaching has been paid attention by many teachers.There are still many problems in English reading in junior high school at this stage.Under the background of exam-oriented education,teacher still pays attention to the variety of reading materials rather than helping students understand the cultural background,theme and vocabulary knowledge contained in texts of the same topic.In order to solve the current academic problems in reading,researcher begins to study the narrow reading method.Narrow reading refers to that learners read the passages of the same author,the same topic or the same background information in a certain period.Through learning relevant information and vocabulary,the readers’ reading pressure or difficulty is reduced and they can better understand the article.On the basis of previous research on narrow reading,the researcher puts forward the following three questions:(1)What problems do junior high school students have in English reading?(2)How does narrow reading help students in reading ?(3)What’s the effect of narrow reading on different students?In order to explore the above three problems,the author took 83 students from two parallel classes in the Affiliated Middle School of Qinghai Normal University as the research object.There are 43 students in experimental class and 40 students in control class.The instruments used in the experiment were questionnaires,tests,and interviews.After the data collection,the author used SPSS 23.0 software to analyze data on the questionnaire and test.Then the researcher uses qualitative analysis for interview.The following conclusions are drawn from the experiment:(1)The English reading of students in the Affiliated Middle School of Qinghai Normal University is at a medium level,and there is still much room for improvement.(2)Narrow reading can cultivate students’ reading ability in reading habit,reading attitude,reading background information and reading method.(3)Narrow reading is more significant for language chanllenged students in reading attitude and reading habit,for medium-level students in reading background information,and for students who’re good at English in reading method.Through this study,it is found that narrow reading can improve students’ English reading in reading habit,reading attitude,reading background information and reading method.Narrow reading can have different effect for students of different proficiency.Narrow reading can enable students to accumulate relevant vocabulary or knowledge,establish the confidence in reading,actively adjust their reading methods and cultivate their reading ability.Therefore,it is of certain significance to apply narrow reading to English teaching in junior high school.
