Reading teaching is the focus of high school English teaching.English reading discourse is an important carrier to cultivate students’ language competence,cultural awareness,thinking quality and learning ability.According to the English Curriculum Standards for Senior High Schools(2017 edition),the cultivation of thinking quality is a vital goal of senior high school English teaching.However,one of the main problems in the current high school English reading teaching is that the superficial understanding of text information,the lack of thematic meaning awareness and the ignorance of English reading teaching with thematic meaning exploration as the main line,which hinders the development of students’ thinking quality.Therefore,based on the existing problems,this study explores the influence of thematic meaning based reading teaching on the thinking quality of high school students.In this thesis,52 students from Class 10,Grade 2 of a senior high school in Zhanjiang City,Guangdong Province are taken as the research objects to conduct a one-semester action research.Questionnaire,interview,test and other methods are used to collect data in this study,aiming to solve the following questions.1.Does thematic-meaning-based English reading teaching affect the thinking quality of high school students?2.What are the impacts of thematic-meaning-based English reading teaching on the thinking quality of senior high school students?In the two rounds of action research,a series of teaching activities are proposed to cultivate thinking quality,including text structure sorting,brainstorming,judging the author’s opinion and writing intention,etc.It is found that English reading teaching based on thematic meaning is beneficial to cultivate high school students’ thinking quality.In addition,the impact of thematic-based English reading teaching on the thinking quality of high school students is mainly reflected in the improvement of logic,criticism and creativity.
