| Workaholism refers to the behavioral tendency that driven by inner pressure, one persistently and uncontrollably thinks about work, excessively works beyond expected and feels negative emotions when not working.Despite plenty of researches on workaholism and its outcomes in working field, little is known about the relationship between workaholic behaviors and marriage in family field, and how this relationship works on couples’ emotions specifically.According to conservation of resource theory,we aim to investigate the effects of workaholic behaviors on couple burnout and explore the mediating role of spousal support as well as the moderating role of gender role ideology for dual-earner couples by building an actor‐partner interdependence model(APIM).Based on the investigation, new empirical evidences on relationship of work and family are revealed, which contributes theoretically and practically. This dissertation includes two studies, both in questionnaire way of research.Study1 is cross-sectional,and data was collected from matched dyads of 179 dual-earner couples at one time.Meanwhile, study 2 is longitudinal, and data was collected from matched dyads of 152 dual-earner couples in 2 times, with 3 months interval. The results revealed as follows:(1)There is significant gender differences in workaholism, couple burnout and gender role ideology among couples with husband’s workaholic behaviors more than wife’s,husband’s couple burnout less severe than wife’s as well as husband’s gender role ideology more traditional than wife’s.(2)The employee’s workaholic behavior could positively predict his/her own as well as his/her spousal’s couple burnout.(3)Spousal support provided by employees played as mediator between his/her own workaholic behavior and his/her own as well as his/her spousal’s couple burnout, indicating that the more one employee showing workaholic behaviors, the less spousal support he/she could provide to spousal, the more couple burnout his/her spousal would feel.(4)Husband’s gender role ideology played as moderator, indicating that the mediating effect of spousal support provided by wife between wife’s workaholic behavior and husband’s couple burnout was stronger when husband’s gender role ideology was higher. In summary, this dissertation reveals the mechanism by which workaholic behavior exacerbates couple burnout for both spouses by inhibiting spousal support between them, enriching the research results in the field of work-family as well as providing valuable references for optimizing organizational management and promoting marital happiness. |
