| In recent years,the popularization of science has received more and more attention.The translation and introduction of excellent foreign popular science works is in full swing.Seven articles from the popular science text The Science of Stress are selected as the source text in this translation report.Under the guidance of skopos theory,the translation methods and skills adopted to improve the readability and acceptability of the target text are explored.The source text holds both linguistic features of a scientific writing and a popular writing.Its scientific features are reflected in the use of terminologies,the tendency of nominalization and the frequent use of passive sentences.Guided by skopos rule and fidelity rule,for terminologies,literal translation is adopted to ensure the scientificity and accuracy of the translation.Annotation is used to give more information,which removes reading barriers and improves the readability.Guided by coherence rule,for the nominalization tendency of the source text,conversion of words is employed to turn some nouns into verbs,which makes the translation more consistent with the verb-dominated characteristic of Chinese.For passive sentences,conversion of ingredients,use of Chinese passive expression and amplification are adopted to reduce the frequency of passive sentences in the target text so that the translation can conform to the Chinese characteristic of using active voice.Its popular writing features are reflected in the use of English idioms and the use of rhetorical devices.Guided by coherence rule,for idioms,loan translation enhances the comprehensibility of the translation.Guided by coherence rule and fidelity rule,for metaphors and parallelism used in the source text,retention of vehicles and repetition reproduce the popular feature.And for the metonymy,the strategy of specification makes the expression clear and accurate and benefits the acceptability of the target text.By summarizing the above translation methods and skills,the translator hopes to provide some methods to improve the readability and acceptability of popular science translation. |
