| With the rapid development of information technology, the globalization of education has become an inevitable trend.MOOCs are Massive Open Online Courses.2012 marks the first year of the internationally recognized MOOCs.MOOCs have seen rapid growth in China since 2013 and are regarded as a revolution in higher education.By the end of February 2022,China had ranked first in both the number of MOOCs and the number of students, and maintained a rapid growth trend.MOOCs overcome distances, faculties, and other restrictions of traditional courses, contributing to a shared education and becoming the primary choice for home-based learning under the background of COVID-19.To serve the global learners,Chinese MOOCs should overcome the language barrier via translating the subtitles.Scientific Computing and the MATLAB Language produced by Central South University(CSU)is one of the first batch of national first-class undergraduate online courses,as well as one of the first batch of courses of CSU released on the i Course international platform. As the project manager and a member of the translating team, the author organized and participated in the translation project of the C-E subtitle translation of MOOC: Scientific Computing and the MATLAB Language and wrote this report regarding the translation practice. The translation practice is conducted under the guidance of Eugene Nida’s functional equivalence theory to represent the information of sci-tech text efficiently and accurately.First, the author systematically analyzes the source text. The source text is concentrated in technical terms,non-subject sentences, segmented sentences, colloquialism, logical layout, etc. Then, the author examines the translation from the lexical level, the syntactic level, and the textual level to explore the best-fit methods of the translation. This translation practice demonstrates that the translation of MOOC subtitles in the field of computer science should not adhere to the equivalence of language form, but realize the goal that readers of the translated text are able to understand and appreciate it in the same way that the original text readers do.Therefore, translators should endeavor to improve their professionalism, ensure the accuracy of terminology, convert sentence patterns appropriately, use amplification or omission reasonably, and represent cohesion and coherence properly to realize the functional equivalence between the source text and the target text. This report hopes to sum up some enlightenments for MOOC translation, especially in the field of sci-tech courses. |
