A Report On E-C Medical Popular Science Translation

As the public’s understanding of health deepens,and increasing demand for healthcare knowledge in China emerges,medical popular science articles have become one of the important ways to inform the public of medical information.Many foreign medical popular science articles introduce up-to-date medical knowledge by employing popular,easilyunderstood language.They also apply various techniques to help readers acquire authoritative knowledge.Therefore,translating such articles contributes to spreading and popularizing advanced international medical knowledge in China,and improves the public’s awareness of health.Although quite a few Chinese theses focus on medical text translation strategies,studies on the strategies of translating medical popular science texts,especially studies on the texts posted on the social media are insufficient yet.This report takes Chinese translations of the texts from We Chat official account of the magazine Friend of Diabetics as its research object,aiming to discuss the translation strategies and techniques of medical popular science texts,and the translation studies on those texts.The English materials in this report come from various foreign medical websites.All translations manage to interpret complicated medical knowledge by employing popular,fluent,and suitable language in the hope of spreading basic medical knowledge of diabetes among readers.In the translation practice,the author has employed translation strategies including adaptation,addition,and abridged translation as well as various tools such as the internet,search engines,parallel texts,etc.to make the renditions scientific,popular,and readable.The author has summarized difficulties and errors that occur in her translation of medical popular science texts,analyzed from the perspectives of words,sentences,and texts,and constructively provided her solutions.Based on this translation practice,the author has accumulated experience in translating English medical popular science texts,deepened her understanding of translation,and developed the capability of dealing with unfamiliar fields.It is hoped that this report can provide some reference for translators in the related fields.
