“People are the foundation of the state”,which shows that population development is related to the development of the country, and population development can not be separated from the security provided by the country. From the 1840,the development of Chinese society was suppressed by Western powers and the Chinese government and its people were suppressed through brutal and bloody wars.In the course of modern development, most of the wars provoked by Western powers are related to the development of the Chinese nation, affecting the distribution and development of the population. After the 1840,various aspects of Guizhou society also changed under the influence of the development of western modernization.Among them, the population development change is one of outstanding characteristics. But through combing the contents of the population research in modern Guizhou,we find that the academic circle has not made a specific study on the changes of the population distribution in modern Guizhou,so this paper is based on the existing population data and previous studies, this paper studies the change of population distribution in Guizhou Province in modern times. This paper is mainly to time development as a clue,to different periods of Guizhou population spatial distribution as the research content, showing the 1840-1949 Guizhou population distribution changes.First of all, according to the course of social development in modern Guizhou, the population development of Guizhou is divided into four main stages, they were from the 20 th year of Daoguang Reign to the 3rd year of Xuantong reign(1840-1911),from the first year of the Republic of China to the twenty-six th year of the Republic of China(1912-1937),from the Twenty-seven th year of the Republic of China to the thirty-four th year of the Republic of China(1938-1945)and from the thirty-five th year of the Republic of China to the thirty-eight th year of the Republic of China(1946-1949).Secondly,through the analysis of the change of population data in Guizhou in different periods,it is concluded that the main factors affecting population change are disaster, war, population movement and land resources, etc.,in particular, the full-scale outbreak of Second Sino-Japanese War led to one of the largest population movements in modern times, the population distribution pattern of Guizhou is a dynamic process in time, space and quantity, which can be clearly recognized. At last, the paper summarizes the characteristics of Guizhou population distribution from 1840 to 1949,which is more north than south and less west than east, and also draw the formation of its characteristics can not be separated from the natural growth of population and population development of social and environmental impact. In a word,by discussing the population development of Guizhou,we can know that the population distribution of Guizhou in modern times was restricted by nature and society, and at the same time affected them.
