Nowadays, the world is undergoing changes unseen in a century. The COVID-19pandemic is still ravaging across the globe. The world economy is mired in deep recession.Global challenges keep popping up.The world is still facing a severe poverty situation and wealth disparity is continually widening in some countries.Against such background,China’s success in poverty reduction holds significance to global efforts on this front. The present author chooses the article“Advancing Poverty Alleviation Relentlessly with Routine Epidemic Prevention and Control in Place”from the journal Economic and Social Development as the source text for Chinese-English translation practice. The article elaborates the necessity and importance of continuing poverty alleviation with routine epidemic prevention and control in place, takes stock of decisive achievements made in poverty alleviation in the 13thFive-Year Plan and prospects that the 14thFive-year Plan continues to consolidate the gains of poverty alleviation. Therefore, the English translation of this article helps the world to understand the course of the Chinese people’s great fight in eliminating extreme poverty under the leadership of the Communist Party of China(CPC)since the 18thCPC National Congress. It also shares China’s approach, experience and practice in poverty alleviation. This report includes task description, translation process, theoretical review, case analysis, and summary. The section of case analysis discusses the difficulties encountered in translation and the corresponding solutions at lexical, syntactic and textual levels.Guided by Nida’s Functional Equivalence Theory, the present author explores appropriate translation strategies and methods through case studies of the source text.At the lexical level, this report mainly discusses the translation of expressions with Chinese characteristics including abbreviations, figurative expressions and four-character idioms. At the syntactic level, the translation of sentences with no subject and long and complex sentences is focused on.At the textual level, this report pays attention to semantic cohesion and coherence. In conclusion,by applying the theory of functional equivalence, the present author explores the problems and solutions of translating political and economic texts at the above three levels in his translation practice, striving to overcome linguistic and cultural barriers and achieving the closest natural equivalence and similar reader responses. The present author’s current translation practice proves that the functional equivalence theory can be applied to guide the translation of political and economic texts, which enables the target text to be close to the source text in terms of content and form to the greatest extent possible, and the readers of target text can obtain a similar reading response to that of the readers of source text,so that the information of the text can be transmitted more effectively and accurately.
